Charities fight back against threats to their independence

The Directory of Social Change is among more than 20 charity leaders to have signed an open letter to Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries, after her predecessor Oliver Dowden vowed to ‘rebalance the woke agenda’ in the sector.

In an extraordinary public intervention in the ongoing recruitment process for the next Chair of the Charity Commission, Dowden recently proclaimed that the next Chair must ‘restore charities’ focus to their central purpose’ and that ‘candidates will be tested on how they will harness the oversight powers of the Commission to commence this rebalancing’.
