Shropshire Older Peoples Assembly

Who Are We?

The Shropshire Older Peoples Assembly (SOPA) was launched in 2011 at the Barnabas Centre in Shrewsbury.

Individuals, groups and organisations which work with older people, attended the event—and more people are being urged to sign up.Our membership list has been increasing since our start in October 2011. Members include Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, Shropshire Association of Senior Citizens Forums, Shropshire Rural Community Council, Severnside Housing, Consortium of Shropshire Tenants, Through the Doorway to Healthy Living, Mayfair Community Centre, Shropshire LINk.

Our Aims

The aim of the Assembly is to champion the needs of our older Shropshire citizens. Older people of Shropshire, who represent a very large percentage of the population, are determined to have a commensurate voice in those areas of council and community activity that impact on them. The new assembly will continue to appeal to and encourage all older people’s groups in the county to participate.

There is an absolute necessity for older people to be consulted, in a meaningful way, on all matters that affect their quality of life. A properly considered and engaged older population has a significant and beneficial impact on the Shropshire community as a whole. The Shropshire Older People’s Assembly will do all that it can to help ensure that the transformation of social care is carried out successfully, but the impact on the community as a whole must be fair, equitable and positive.
