LGBT History Month
LGBT people can face barriers to full participation in public life, despite all the advances in equality. Some LGBT young people, experience mental health issues, self-harm and suicidal thoughts. Important work is taking place in and around Shrewsbury to overcome barriers and provide mutual support. One important event is Shrewsbury LGBT History Month. Work is taking place to raise £1,500 to celebrate LGBT History Month (February 2019).
The organisers hope to play a part in stripping away the barriers that hold LGBT people back. The group plans include: exhibitions, presentations, films, a young people’s showcase, an afternoon with Clare Summerskill, who will present a selection of character monologues from her play ‘Rights of Passage’ created from interviews with LGBT asylum seekers in the UK, and an evening with poet Dean Atta. Shropshire Community Fund
The High Sheriff of Shropshire has launched an initiative to support small community groups and charities in the county. The Shropshire Community Fund will help a variety of organisations across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin. The fund is to be grown as an endowment so the interest from can be shared in small grants for years to come. It will be managed by Shropshire Rural Communities Charity (RCC) and builds on the work it currently does helping charities and voluntary groups access funding available.
