Shropshire Prepares For The General Data Protection Regulations

Shropshire Association of Local Councils (SALC), Shropshire Voluntary and Community Sector Assembly (VCSA), Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin Council have been working together to raise awareness of new data protection requirements. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will replace the Data Protection Act from 25 May 2018.

Partnership working has taken place in order to ensure local councils and voluntary sector organisations are ready to meet new requirements. On Wednesday 8th November over 80 local councils and voluntary sector organisations met in the Council Chamber at Shirehall to learn more about GDPR.

Councillor Joyce Barrow, Shropshire Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities opened the event and commented:

This is a great opportunity for all of us to learn more about the General Data Protection Regulations, find out more about best practice in data protection and identify how we can all prepare for the changes in May.”

The main speaker was Robert Montgomery from Telford and Wrekin Council. Robert presented the complex topic and detailed regulations clearly and with much humour. The audience left the event with an understanding of key requirements and work required. As Robert said:

“Data Protection is not sexy but it is the law.”
