The Henry Smith Charity Re-launches Grants Programmes

The Henry Smith Charity distributes over £28 million a year in grant programmes designed to reduce social and economic disadvantage in the UK.

Following a review of its grant procedures, the Funder has refined its Main Grant programmes, separating it into two defined funds under the same new strategy that aims to work with people for whom other sources of support have failed, been inappropriate or are simply not available.

This will be achieved through the following priorities:

  • Increasing resilienceempowering people, encouraging integration and personal independence, helping people to recover and move on.
  • Creating opportunities and life chances raising aspiration, equipping people with new skills, unlocking and enabling potential, and providing the means to improve life circumstances.
  • Empowering communitiesstrengthening and connecting communities and making people feel valued, providing opportunities for social connections and relationships, encouraging participation and inclusion.

The Charity’s grants programmes now stand as follows:

  • The Main Grants: Improving Lives Fund is the largest of the Charity’s funds, and will support the work of established charitable organisations with incomes of up to £2 million. Funding is available for projects that help people when other sources of support have failed, are inappropriate, or are simply not available.
  • The Main Grants: Strengthening Communities Fund is designed to support small charitable organisations working at grassroots level in the most disadvantaged areas of the UK.
  • The County Grants programme provides grants for smaller organisations working with disadvantaged people and communities in one of eight English counties. Groups should note that funding for Surrey is not available until early 2018.
  • The Holiday Grants for Children programme provides grants for recreational trips and holidays for groups of children aged 13 and under in the UK who are disabled or disadvantaged. These are one-off short grants.
  • The Christian Projects grant programme awards grants to projects that explicitly promote the Christian faith in the UK.

Grant sizes are generally between £10,000 and £60,000 and are for charities and not-for-profit organisations, including social enterprises that are based and working in the UK.

New £4.5m Social Action Fund Launches for England

The Big Lottery Fund and the Government have launched a new £4.5 million fund to support local social action in England.

The Place Based Social Action which is funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and National Lottery money has been set up to increase the capacity of communities, civil society organisations, public sector bodies and businesses to work together to address priorities which matter to people locally.

The fund is open to existing partnerships which can include charities and other representatives from VCSE organisations, local authority representatives, statutory and non-statutory bodies and Clinical Commissioning Groups.

The call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) is open to existing partnerships across England, that have identified or are already working together to address a social challenge or local priority in their area.

This is a three-phase programme which will run until 2025.

20 EOIs will be selected to take part in phase 1.

In phase 1, partnerships will receive support and up to £5,000. Ten of these partnerships will be selected to apply for phase 2, with a grant of up to £240,000 on offer. And only 5 of these partnerships will be selected to apply for phase 3, with a further grant of up to £255,000 on offer.

  • Phase 1 – for up to 20 areas, support and development, up to £5,000 towards expenses.
  • Phase 2 – For up to 10 areas, support and development, up to £240,000 grant award.
  • Phase 3 – For up to 5 areas, up to £255,000 grant award.

Department of Health Launches Beyond Places of Safety Scheme

The Department of Health is running a £15 million grants scheme to improve support services for those needing urgent and emergency mental healthcare in England.

The Beyond Places of Safety schemes seeks to improve the provision of local services for those who are vulnerable to a mental health crisis, including conditions such as psychosis, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders that could cause people to be a risk to themselves or others.

The new fund, which follows on from the previous Improving Places of Safety scheme, is currently accepting bids from Crisis Care Concordat leads for innovative projects that focus on:

  • Preventing people from reaching crisis point in the first place.
  • Helping to develop new approaches to support people who experience a mental health crisis.

The total budget is £15 million. The scheme will disperse capital funding, either as Public Dividend Capital to the NHS or as grants to other providers. The minimum grant is £5,000. There is no maximum award.

The funding is to be used for capital costs, and projects must be delivered by 31 March 2020.

The Connect Fund – Deadline 5th November!

The Connect Fund has been set up to strengthen the social investment market in England to better meet the needs of charities and social enterprises.  

The fund provides grants to develop shared infrastructure resources for a market that supports mission. The Connect Fund supports tools, partnerships and initiatives that advance a more open and accessible social investment market.

What is the Connect Fund?The Connect Fund, previously known as the “Social Investment Infrastructure Fund” is a £1.5 million fund for grants and investments that the Barrow Cadbury Trust manages in partnership with Access – the Foundation for Social Investment. The fund supports intermediaries and infrastructure organisations to make social investment work better for a wider range of charities and social enterprises.

The Connect Fund seeks to build a better social investment market by:

  • Improving the connection of social investment to charities and social enterprises
  • Connecting existing voluntary sector infrastructure organisations to the social investment market
  • Better connecting social investment intermediaries through shared data and resources
